The Number One Complaint I Hear From People New to Phoenix...

by Tricia Gillam

No, suprisingly it isn't the summer heat. It also isn't our spicy wildlife.

The biggest complaint I hear is that it is hard to make new friends.

This may be a valid statement anytime you move. Making friends as an adult is just harder anywhere. The layout of the Phoenix metro area doesn't make this easier either. The suburban sprawl means that most people drive quite a distance to and from work and our public transportatoin just isn't like other cities. Even the local school districts often allow boundary exceptions so the kids in the neighborhood don't all attend the same school like they did when I was growing up in Chandler.

That said, as a local community builder, I promise you that you can curate a fabulous community for yourself in your new Arizona home.

Here are a few tips to get you started:
  • Pick a community friendly neighborhood: Many master-planned communities (like Eastmark, Morrison Ranch, DC Ranch, Warner Ranch etc) are designed for connection.

  • Join Facebook Groups with others with common interests: Phoenix has an abundance of facebook groups for every activity you can imagine. Need help finding one? Let me know. If you don't see one you like, you can always create one too. I can help with this as well! Make sure to go to the events the group puts on when you join.

  • Check out local meet up groups: Meetup.com is full of local meetup options to make new friends.

  • Fitness communities: Orangetheory, CrossFit, yoga studios, or pickleball leagues are all huge here and a great way to make new friends while also taking care of you.

  • Volunteer locally: Places like animal shelters, food banks, and community gardens are great for meeting people who care about giving back.

  • Don’t wait for people to invite you: Phoenicians are friendly, but many of them are new to the area too. Invite a neighbor for coffee or host a small get-together. More often than not, I think you will find they are looking for friends too!

  • Consistency matters: Show up to the same classes, facebook group events, meetups etc regularly so you start recognizing and connecting with familiar faces.

  • Become part of the Trish Gillam Real Estate Community: I am a community builder and connector. I love connnecting people! I have grown a variety of communities over the years. I regularly host events for my client community.  I look forward to seeing you at an event in the future!
